LADO

LADO Croatian dance performers, Revlin Fort Terrace, Dubrovnik.

TRAVEL REPORT:

On the evenings of 12 and 13 July 2011, the talented “LADO Ensemble of Traditional Dances and Songs of Croatia” performed songs from European Nations and dances of Croatian heritage for the 62nd Dubrovnik Summer Festival in Stari Grad, Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Performances were held in Rector’s Palace Atrium and Revlin Fort Terrace, respectively.

Founded in 1949, LADO is a national professional folk ensemble that aims at exploring, arranging and performing the finest examples of Croatian heritage. The archaic Slavic word LADO is often used as a refrain in ancient ritual songs from northwestern Croatia, and is a synonym for “good,” “sweet,” and “lovable.”

Thirty-seven talented dancers, who are also singers, transformed their dance ensemble into a choir. Fifteen gifted musicians played about fifty different instruments, both traditional and classical. Often referred to as, “the traveling museum,” LADO owns a unique collection of original folk costumes, some more than a century old, which are used in performances around the world.
